Grays Outlast Cropdusters in 12-Inning Thriller
The DC Grays defeated the Olney Cropdusters Tuesday evening 4-3 in 12 innings. Tuesday's game was a make up of this past Sunday's game that was rescheduled due to inclement weather. DC evened it's record at 3-3, while Olney dropped to 4-2.
It was a pitchers duel to start the game for both teams. Ty Morris (Marist) took the mound for the Grays, his second appearance and first start of the season. Matt Shamany (Millersville) started his first game of the season for Olney.
Morris allowed just one base runner through the first two innings, a hit by pitch to catcher Carter Richey (VCU).
DC scattered hits early. First baseman Ethan Nagy (Lock Haven) hit a single with two outs to right field in the top of the first. Second baseman Joey Chitla (Wofford) had an infield single in the top of the second.
The third inning brought the first scoring action of the game. Catcher Jack McMullan (Liberty) singled to right with one out. Third baseman Ryan Soong (Washington Univ.) followed McMullan's single with a walk. Shortstop Noel Rivera (Marist) then cleared the bases with one swing of the bat. His two-run double brought his season RBI total to nine, a team best figure. Grays took the first lead of the game 2-0.
Cropdusters' designated hitter Jaden Knight (Notre Dame) drew a one-out walk. Ahmaad Duff (Alabama) came in as a pinch runner following an injury to Knight. This would prove to be a worthwhile move as Brian Scott (Frostburg) hit a double, and Duff would score on an Andrew Kell (Salisbury) groundout, cutting DC's lead to 2-1.
The middle innings were a pitching masterclass for Morris. He allowed just five baserunners in his 6.2 innings of work. Morris mowed down the Cropdusters line up with ease.
Glenn Smith (Richmond) entered the game to start the seventh for Olney. TJ Addonizio (Richmond) ripped a leadoff single into right, and took second on a passed ball and stole third. McMullan worked an 11-pitch walk that featured six foul balls. Soong drove in Addonizio on a sacrifice fly to extend the Grays lead to 3-1.
With Morris still on the mound to start the bottom of the seventh, Zakye Hawkins (Utah) doubled down the left field line. A groundout from Richey would move Hawkins to third. A walk from Rohne Kelin (Utah) would bring Morris's fantastic evening to a close. Jamie Whittier (Wofford) took to the mound for the final out of the inning. Hawkins would score on a ball in the dirt to cut the DC lead to 3-2.
In the bottom of the ninth, Hawkins would hit an RBI double to tie the game at 3-3.
After a quick tenth inning, Anders Ahladas (Randolph Macon) entered the game for the eleventh. Three fast pop outs sent the game into the twelfth.
Soong worked the count full to draw a one-out walk. He then stole second and third base during Rivera's at bat. Nagy would reach base on a throwing error, scoring Soong. Grays took the lead 4-3.
Ahladas remained on the mound to close it out. After allowing a walk to Richey, he struck out the side to secure his second win of the season and the Grays' third.
A fantastic win in Olney Tuesday evening.
