The Grays split Saturday's doubleheader at Woodbridge against the Senators in two tightly contested games filled with standout plays and no shortage of drama.
Game 1 – Grays 4, Senators 3
The opener ended in thrilling fashion as Tanner Wolpert (Franklin & Marshall) delivered a walk-off sac fly in the bottom of the 7th to secure a 4-3 win. The Grays jumped ahead early with RBIs from Tyler Wiltsey (Rutgers) and Noel Rivera (Marist), while Andy Rivera (Holy Family) scored after a wild defensive sequence. On the mound, Kimani Davis (Xavier, LA) and AJ Thomas (Marist) held firm before Mason Potter (Hood College) and Andrew Ruggeri (Penn) shut things down late.
The game was marked by strong defensive moments, including a critical relay from Wiltsey to Rivera to Ahokovi (Nicholls State) for an out at the plate, and a heads-up challenge by head coach Jack Besser, catching the opponent using an illegal bat to halt a scoring threat. Every inch counted and the Grays made sure the final one went in their favor.
Game 2 – Senators 1, Grays 0
Game two was a true pitchers' duel from the start, with Ty Morris (Marist) tossing a gem and Ruggeri following up with more scoreless relief. The lone run came in the 4th inning off a sac fly following an error and stolen bases. The Grays' defense continued to shine - Andy Rivera made two grabs in right field to open the 4th, and Luke Caucci (Lafayette) turned two double plays on the night with help from Rivera and Wolpert.
Despite getting runners aboard in the final inning, including loading the bases after walks from Wolpert and Rivera and an intentional walk to Marc Quarrie (Wofford), the Grays grounded into a double play to end it. A tough ending to a well-fought game, but not without its highlights.
The Grays are back on the road on Sunday, July 5th, to take on the Bethesda Big Train at Shirley Povich Field in a doubleheader starting at 10am.
