The DC Grays dropped both games of Sunday's doubleheader to the Bethesda Big Train, falling in two tight contests - 8–5 and 3–0 at Shirley Povich Field.
Game 1: Big Train 8, Grays 5
The Grays struck early with a run in the second inning, as Tanner Wolpert (Franklin & Marshall) led off with a double and Marc Quarrie (Wofford) drove him in with an RBI two-bagger of his own. A huge fourth inning followed, with Tyler Wiltsey (Rutgers) launching a two-run homer and aggressive baserunning from Luke Caucci (Lafayette), Sam Moseman (NYU), and Ryan Soong (Washington U) helping push across four total runs to make it 5–2.
Owen Basso (Lafayette) got the start and gave the Grays a steady outing through the first three innings. He kept Big Train off balance with solid command and composure on the mound before handing things off to the bullpen. Unfortunately, Big Train's offense surged in the sixth, scoring five runs to take the lead. The Grays threatened again in the seventh, putting two on with two outs, but couldn't push across the tying run.
Game 2: Big Train 3, Grays 0
Game two turned into a pitchers' duel, with Dean Qira (Stevens) holding the Big Train to just one run through four innings. The Grays' defense stayed locked in, with Luke Caucci making multiple plays at third and the outfield keeping runners honest.
Offensively, the Grays struggled to string together hits, managing only three singles, two in the final inning by Noel Rivera (Marist) and Sam Moseman (NYU), but couldn't bring them home. Despite the late push,
Bethesda's pitching and defense held on to preserve the shutout.
The Grays will look to bounce back Monday in their home game in Woodbridge against the Silver Spring Takoma Thunderbolts at 7pm at Woodbridge HS.
