Early Lead Fades in Rain-Shortened Loss to Cropdusters
In an unusually early 11 a.m. start on Sunday, the DC Grays traveled to Olney to take on the Cropdusters but came up short in a weather-shortened 12–1 defeat.
The Grays got off to a promising start. Andy Rivera (Holy Family) led off the top of the second with a sharp single and later came around to score on a deep RBI double by Marc Quarrie (Wofford), giving the Grays an early 1–0 lead. Quarrie's double was one of the Grays' offensive highlights of the day, as DC looked to build momentum in the morning matchup.
Ty Morris (Marist) took the mound and gave the Grays a solid start through the early innings. However, the Cropdusters responded quickly with a two-run homer in the bottom of the third, grabbing a lead they would not relinquish. Morris pitched into the fifth before handing things off to Raphael Schneider, who entered to limit further damage against a Cropdusters lineup that stayed hot.
Despite singles from Noel Rivera (Marist), Quarrie, and Ryan Soong (Washington Univ.), the Grays struggled to string together hits against a dominant Olney staff. The Cropdusters padded their lead with runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth, taking advantage of walks and defensive miscues, including four unearned runs in the seventh inning alone.
Defensively, the Grays cycled in fresh legs throughout the game, with Dixon Monk (Georgetown) taking over in left field, Marcellus Brown (Lincoln) coming in behind the plate, and Soong shifting to shortstop. Still, the Cropdusters continued to apply pressure, and with storm clouds building, the umpires called the game in the bottom of the eighth due to inclement weather.
