DC Comeback Falls Short in Thursday Night Loss to Giants
WOODBRIDGE, Va. — The DC Grays nearly mounted a dramatic ninth-inning comeback on Thursday night, but ultimately fell 7-4 to the Gaithersburg Giants at Woodbridge High School.
Trailing by three entering the bottom of the ninth, the Grays quickly loaded the bases with no outs, putting pressure on the Giants' bullpen. But the rally was cut short as Gaithersburg recorded three straight outs to escape the jam and close out the win.
The loss dropped DC to 14-17 on the season.
The Giants opened the scoring in the first with a two-run homer off Grays starter Kimani Davis (Xavier). Davis rebounded with a composed outing, keeping the game close through six innings of work. The Grays tied it in the third with back-to-back RBI hits from Ryan Soong (Washinton University) and Tanner Wolpert (Franklin & Marshall), making it 2-2.
Gaithersburg retook the lead in the fifth with a two-run double, then added three more in the top of the ninth on a wild pitch and timely hitting. The Grays answered in the bottom half with RBI hits from Andy Rivera (Holy Family) and Soong, but couldn't complete the comeback.
Soong finished the night 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Wolpert added an RBI double, while Rivera, Marc Quarrie (Wofford), and Jack McMullan (Washington College) each had hits in the effort. Drew Norton (Dickinson) and Raphael Schneider (Stevens) provided solid innings out of the bullpen.
The Grays will look to bounce back on the road tonight in their next matchup against the Southern Maryland Senators, as they continue to push through the final stretch of the season. First pitch is at 7pm at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf.
