DC Grays Grind Out Gritty Win in 13-Inning Thriller Against Thunderbolts
What started as a wild, back-and-forth contest on July 11 stretched over 13 innings and two separate nights before finally ending in a hard-fought 6-5 victory for the DC Grays. After storms forced a suspension with the score tied 5-5 in the 12th, both teams returned to action on July 20 to finish what had become a true endurance test.
The Thunderbolts came out swinging on July 11, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. But the Grays responded immediately, with Noel Rivera (Marist), Joe Marini (Catholic), and Andy Rivera (Holy Family) stringing together three straight singles in the second to bring in a pair of runs. More chaos ensued in the fifth, as the Grays rallied for three, highlighted by Tanner Wolpert's (Franklin & Marshall) RBI single and Noel Rivera's clutch hit to tie it up at 5.
Strong relief outings from Colin Casey (Randolph-Macon), Alex Bergen (Gettysburg), Andrew Ruggeri (Penn), and Chris Fortunato (Stevenson) kept the game locked in a tense deadlock through the extra innings. The defense stepped up behind them too, with the Grays executing two pickoffs and a pair of double plays to keep the Thunderbolts from pulling ahead.
When play resumed a week later in the bottom of the 12th, the Grays were tested immediately. With the winning run on second, Fortunato worked out of the jam with poise, getting a soft liner and a force out to escape unscathed.
Finally, in the top of the 13th, Joe Marini smashed a leadoff triple to deep right. Joey Chitla (Wofford) followed with a towering sacrifice fly that gave the Grays a long-awaited lead. The Grays' defense took care of business in the bottom half, locking in the win and capping off a rollercoaster of a ballgame.
From gritty pitching to timely hits and defensive hustle, the Grays fought through every inning. After 13 frames, two dates, and countless momentum swings, DC walked away with one of their gutsiest wins of the season.
