Grays Start Off the Season Hot
By: Ethan Wentworth
In their first game of the 2026 season, the DC Grays dominated the Southern Maryland Senators, winning 8-4.
DC led off the game strong, scoring a run out of the gate in the first inning on a bases-loaded walk that scored Joey Chitla (William & Mary) who had already stolen second base and gotten to third on a wild pitch in the inning.
The Grays would extend their lead to 2-0 in the 3rd inning after a double from Xavier Bradley (Southern) brought home another run.
The Grays scored twice more on steals in the 4th inning with Joey Chitla (William & Mary) and Evan Rosario (Shepherd) scoring on errant throws to first and a wild pitch respectively.
The Senators responded quickly in the bottom of the inning, scoring once in the 4th inning and twice more in the 5th to put pressure on the Grays' lead. The Grays responded by taking the momentum back in the 6th with a 2-RBI single by Xavier Bradley (Southern) putting the Grays up 6-4.
From there the Grays never looked back. Ryan Stoddard (Lafayette) and Peyton Ford (Cal. U of PA) extended the lead to 8-4 with two more RBI singles, which turned out to be the final score.
Pitcher Coen Devillier (Catholic) pitched lights out in relief with 3.2 scoreless innings and 3 strikeouts.
On offense, the team showed great patience with a total of 14 walks including both Evan Rosario (Shepherd) and Aaron Rowell (Pensacola State) having 3 walks.
The Grays have their second game Wednesday, June 3rd at the Alexandria Aces. The game will be at Frank Mann Field at 6:30PM.
