Grays Come Up Just Short in 7–6 Nail-Biter Against Aces
By: Ethan Wentworth
The Grays had a nail biting game against the Aces and were defeated 7-6 at Robert J. Talbot field in an extremely unnatural affair.
James Pedas (Dickinson) would start on the mound for the Grays and got off to a great start, not allowing any hits in the 1st inning. The Grays wouldn't be able to score in the bottom of the frame, but they would pick up 2 of their 12 total base steals on the game, which is undoubtedly the most the team has had in a game this year.
The Aces would strike first, scoring in the top of the 2nd, however the Grays wouldn't let this lead stay for long. Evan Wilson (Richmond) would hit a single down the middle to score Travis Church (Marist) and then himself score after a bizarre error by the pitcher throwing to third base.
The Aces would retake the lead in the 3rd, scoring 3 runs, but the Grays would cut their lead in half going into the 4th with Travis Church (Marist) hitting a sacrifice fly to score Ben Drinkwine (UNCW).
The Grays would continue this momentum into the next frame, scoring via a Beny Bikar Jr. (Southern) single to bring Keegan Mcgraw (Chatham) to home plate and a Ben Drinkwine (UNCW) single to score Hartley Rahman (Catawba).
The Aces retook the lead in the 5th inning, scoring 2 runs and the game would be knotted up in the bottom of the frame, with Keegan Mcgraw (Chatham) scoring on a wild pitch. Reliever Caden Brown (Southern) did incredible in his 3 innings of work, preventing any runs, only allowing 1 hit, and delivering 3 strikeouts.
The Aces would take the lead in the eighth and the Grays would have a chance to win in the bottom of the 9th in a 1 run game. After getting both the tying and winning run on base, the Grays would unfortunately fall short 7-6 in this back and forth battle.
Evan Wilson (Richmond) would lead the way for the Grays in a two way performance with a pair of hits on 4 appearances to score and drive in a run. On the pitching side, in 2 innings he allowed 2 hits and 1 run but put in 5 strikeouts in the 7th and 8th. The league's Hitter of the Week Hartley Rahman (Catawba) would show immense patience, tallying 5 walks on the game and scoring a run.
The Grays look to carry over the positives from this game into their doubleheader 7/13 starting at 5PM against the Braves at South County High School.
